The First Big Trip
Meet Lina the bee — the hero of our WIDI Kids' Program 2020. A story about courage, curiosity, and helpfulness, in which a little honeybee experiences her very first foraging flight over the Tyrolean mountain meadows.

Finally! Today is the day! Bee Line is very nervous. „Is my hat on straight?“ the diligent honey bee asks herself. Everything has to be perfect for her first outing as a honey collector. After spending the last few days building combs, taking care of the baby bees, and guarding the hive, Bee Line can finally go out for the first time today to search for colorful flowers in the Tyrolean meadows. Slowly, with slightly wobbly feet, Bee Line crawls forward with the others, and a little later she's already at the hive entrance. She looks around. The sun is shining, and she stretches out her four wings. Line checks her six legs one more time and adjusts her red hat. „I want to be especially pretty today,“ murmurs the little bee.
One of her colleagues is just returning from a flight. She lands next to Bee Line and starts dancing. This way, she shows all the other honeybees the way to the next food source. Bee Line understood which direction she has to fly. „Yippee, here we go,“ she shouts and takes off. And her friends take off too.
„If I'm already out here, I want to see where I live too!“ Bee Line decides, flying a lap around her beehive. „Everything is much bigger outside,“ she thinks, and sees a giant tree in front of her. „I have to climb that, from up there I'll surely see everything even better!“ No sooner said than done. Bee Line flies past the branches and twigs, and she's already at the top. „Wow, it's beautiful! The mountains, the meadows, and all the flowers!“
At that moment, Bee Line remembers that she actually has to collect nectar. And so, without delay, she quickly flies to the meadow. Bee Line flies from flower to flower, collects the sweet nectar, and packs the pollen onto her hind legs. She wants to do everything right on her first flight, of course. After all, she has already lost a little time. So she flies from the bellflower to the forget-me-not, then to the gentian, and finally to the alpine rose. „Oh, how beautiful,“ rejoices Bee Line, „these many large flowers here are brimming with nectar!“ Line is totally happy!
It dawns on her that she is all alone out here. „Where are the others?“ she asks herself and calls out loudly, „Hello, is anyone else there?“ Since no one answers her, she starts feeling uneasy. „I lost sight of them when I was making my rounds around the beehive!“ she realizes. At that moment, Bee Line gets scared. She is not used to being alone, and decides to fly back home. Then she realizes she has forgotten which direction the beehive is in. „How will I find my way home now, all by myself?“ Bee Line asks herself sadly and sits down on a leaf.
At that moment, Gusti the grasshopper hops over to her. „Hello, I'm Gusti from Tyrol! What's wrong with you?“ he asks, sitting down next to Line. „I don't know how to get home anymore. I can't find my friends from the beehive,“ Bee Line tells him sadly. „I haven't seen any other bees since I flew to the big tree and discovered this meadow here.“ „We'll figure it out. We'll surely find your home. I'll help you!“ says Gusti the grasshopper and immediately asks, „Which tree was it?“ „It's very big and has thick green needles,“ Bee Line explains to him. „Then it can only be that big Swiss pine back there!“ exclaims Gusti the grasshopper.
And indeed. As the bee Line flies up to the Swiss stone pine, she already sees the beehive standing behind the bushes and is happy. „Thanks for your help, Gusti! I have to hurry home now to drop off the nectar and tell them that there are many more flowers here!“ Bee Line calls happily after him.
Upon arriving at the beehive, she greets everyone happily and proudly shows off all her nectar and pollen. Immediately, she begins to dance to show her friends where all the flowers are. And all the bees sing together:
„Little bee Line, fly out.,
Bring a lot of nectar home!
Good honey is in our combs,
that we have in the hive now!“
Just like Bienen Line, real honey bees truly dance! With their „waggle dance,“ they tell the other bees exactly which direction and how far to go to the next flower meadow. On the Tyrolean alpine meadows, they find a particularly large variety of flowers—from bluebells to alpine roses.
